Accent-rate

Graphic Design & Typography

‘Accent-uate’ explores typography created through language, accent and dialect. I purposefully chose objects such as wood planks, ladders, and poles to build three dimensional letters reflecting the speech and the visual landscape of the Shetland Isles. It is a country side with lots of long windy roads which are dotted with random unfinished homes. From this, I also created a two dimensional typeface made from the random objects within the landscape. I found it difficult to understand a lot of their language, therefore I chose to create the word “warsel'' taken from the Shetlandic dialect meaning ‘to struggle’. The visual gaps in between the random objects and unfinished homes reflect the length of sound that I am unable to audibly understand of the dialect.
